Writing Conversations (using Quotation Marks)

I used various pictures to inspire “conversations” between the animals. The kids loved to use their imaginations and were eager to learn more about using quotations. This is a great time to discuss the fairytale, folktale and fable character’s “dialogue” too. Allow the children to pick their favorite picture. I keep several of these pictures for my kids to use all year long! www.visualccl.com

Story Element Discussion Cards

You have to try this in class. I use story element discussion cards with my students every week. The story elements may include, but not be limited to ( setting, characters, problem, solution etc.) What is so amazing with these discussion cards are the ‘dig-deeper’ questions I have added for those conversations to go to the next level. My students use these cards for collaboration/discussion after reading a story. I color-coded the cards so each of my collaborative groups would not mix their cards with another group!

Cards can be used 2 ways-

1.   Kids can read their card and have the group discuss. 2.

Kids read their discussion card and respond to their own questions. Group collaborates both ways. Just encourage your groups to dig deeper each time. For example: Characters

Who are they? How do they act or feel in the beginning, middle and end of the story? What are the characters doing? What or who do the characters remind you of?    See  www.visualccl.com for many other units to implement in your classroom. Fairytale/Folktale Manila Folder Display

Note***This display board can be set up various ways: Attach each activity title under the top upper edge to attract kids to the display. Use small sticky note name tags for kids to attach to their working section on the display; now others will know who is working on the activity and may choose to join in as a partner. You can also add a pocket in back of each display section and not use the title. This way you can make Popsicle stick names and have then kids move their names to the back pockets and poke them up for others to see who is working in each section. Lastly, if your readers are leveled, display the levels and use name tags to assign kids. This provides a wonderful visual. Move as needed.

Protagonists and Antagonists – Fairytales and Fables

Students were encouraged to choose the protagonist and the antagonist in a favorite fairytale. Then we discussed “moods” and colors that represent “moods”. Next, the students painted the background colors reflecting the character’s moods, illustrated them and attached the characters to the background, setting the stage for their visual writing. Each student was responsible for writing an opinion paragraph about both characters and shared their writing with the class.

Factual Paragraph Writing

I absolutely am amazed at the results of my student’s factual writing. I introduce my students to this writing in the beginning of the year for our first nonfiction story. We discuss topic sentences and locating important facts within the text. Then we talk about supportive sentences using the facts and transitional phrases. We practice writing factual paragraphs together and conclude the paragraph with a restating of the topic sentence. You will notice the sample I have here. Thatcher is 8 years old. His writing is fabulous.

This is an example of a published piece; visual writing!!
